Co-hosts Belgium beat Sweden 2-1 in a thrilling opening match to Euro 2000, earning victory despite a monumental blunder by their goalkeeper Filip De Wilde. Belgium seemed to be coasting to victory with goals either side of halftime from Bart Goor and Emile Mpenza. But De Wilde made a dreadful hash of a Philippe Leonard back pass in the 54th minute, first standing on the ball and then losing his balance to allow Johan Mjallby to go past him and stroke it into an empty net. Sweden pressed hard for an equaliser but their chances disappeared when captain Patrik Andersson was sent off nine minutes from time for a foul on Goor.

He used his strength to dispossess Roland Nilsson, then showed a quick burst of pace to give himself room for a left-footed shot that defeated Magnus Hedman at his near post.	- 1.5 MB - 2.9 MB - 3.0 MB Mjallby (53') (2-1). De Wilde by attempting to field a back-pass he stood on the ball and presented Mjallby with a simple side-footer.
- 1.5 MB - 3.0 MB - 3.1 MB Mpenza E. (46') (2-0). Strupar's audacious flick sent him clear, and he crashed an stunning shot past Hedman.
