Defending European champions Germany were rocked by an early goal but fought back to earn a laboured 1-1 draw with Romania in their opening Euro 2000 Group A match. Romania took the lead less than five minutes from the start when the German defence were caught napping by Adrian Ilie who broke down the left and squared across the face of the goal for Viorel Moldovan to score. The Romanians thoroughly dominated the early stages against a leaden German team but the champions finally broke their grip when Mehmet Scholl scored with a superb, curling left foot drive from the edge of the box in the 28th minute. The match, in wich Thomas Haessler earned his 100th cap for Germany and Lothar Matthaeus extended his world record to 148 appearances, faded in the second half though both teams wasted good scoring chances, notably Moldovan who blasted wide before an open goal in the 68th minute.
