A dazzling Portugal came from two goals down to beat England 3-2 in the best game so far at Euro 2000. England went two goals up in 18 minutes through Paul Scholes and Steve McManaman, both from David Beckham crosses, but a Portuguese side inspired by midfielders Luis Figo and Rui Costa fought back brilliantly. Figo pulled one back with a superb long range shot in the 22nd minute and Joao Pinto equalised with a diving header for the best goal of the match in the 37th. Nuno Gomes scored the winner in the 59th minute to put Portugal on top of Group A. England's last defeat at a major tournament after leading by two goals was at the 1970 World Cup finals when West Germany beat them 3-2 after extra time.
