Italy beat co-hosts Belgium 2-0 in Euro 2000 Group B, virtually assuring themselves a place in the quarter-finals. The Italians, who won their first match 2-1 against Turkey, opened the scoring through Francesco Totti in only the sixth minute and secured the points with a second from Stefano Fiore in the 66th. Italy were unlucky not to get a third 11 minutes from time when Joos Valgaeren headed into his own net but the referee ruled that the Belgian defender had been pushed by substitute Marco Delvecchio. Italy could qualify for the last eight on Thursday if Sweden fail to beat Turkey in another group B match in Eindhoven. Belgium, who beat Sweden in the opening match of the tournament, may have to beat Turkey in their last game to go through.
