A goal from captain Alan Shearer gave England a 1-0 win over Germany at Euro 2000, their first victory over their arch-rivals in a competitive match since the 1966 World Cup final. Shearer ducked to head home a curling free kick from David Beckham wich evaded a cluster of German defenders and bounced once before it reached him in the 53rd minute. Carsten Jancker wasted a great chance to equalise three minutes later and Mehmet Scholl went close in the 59th as Germany pressed forward to get on even terms. England now need only to draw with Romania in their final Group A game to advance to the quarter-finals with Portugal, who guaranteed a last eight place when they beat Romania 1-0 earlier today.
