Substitute David Trezeguet gave France a golden goal victory in the 103rd minute of their Euro 2000 final as they beat Italy 2-1. Marco Delvecchio had given Italy the lead in the 56th minute when he volleyed home a Gianluca Pessotto cross from close range. Italy seemed to be heading for certain victory but French substitute Sylvain Wiltord broke through down the left in the last minute of four minutes of stoppage time and stabbed home the equaliser. France became the first reigning world champions to win the European title.
