Match report
Irish striker Robbie Keane struck a stoppage time equaliser to snatch a 1-1 draw against Germany. Germany were on the verge of becoming the first team to qualify for the second round of the World Cup after Miroslav Klose headed his fourth goal of the competition. But Keane ran on to a knockdown from substitute Niall Quinn to smash the ball past German goalkeeper Oliver Kahn in the third minute of injury time to keep Ireland's World Cup alive. Ireland coach Mick McCarthy said his side had richly deserved a point after putting the Germans under severe pressure in the second period.
"I'm so happy for the lads," said MCarthy. "We had battered the Germans and we got something out of it with Robbie's goal. We've given them a right doing.
"We had to fight because what's the point of coming here and getting nothing. We've given ourselves a chance."
Klose had strengthened his position as this tournament's leading scorer when he scored with a header in the 19th minute of the Group E clash at the Kashima Stadium to add to the hat-trick of headers he notched against Saudi Arabia. Inspirational midfielder Michael Ballack picked him out with a superb pass and Klose got ahead of Ian Harte to direct the ball past Irish goalkeeper Shay Given. The 23-year-old Kaiserslautern forward performed his customary somersault to celebrate and the Germans had showed again that this side is stronger than many critics suggested before the tournament. Ballack created another clear chance after 70 minutes, his vision releasing Carsten Jancker only for the lanky striker to shoot wide as Given closed the angle. Klose's wayward header denied him his second goal of the night as he failed to make the most of a good cross. It had seemed as if Ireland were heading for defeat after wasting a handful of chances, but then came Keane's late goal. They could have drawn level after an hour when Steve Finnan's cross was headed down to Damien Duff but his shot was superbly saved by Kahn, the German captain using his knee to deflect the ball. Kahn also threw himself at the feet of Keane to deny him in the closing stages and Quinn chipped over the bar. Keane had missed a first-half chance to equalise when he miscued an attempted bicycle kick just before half-time, seemingly unaware of how much time and space he actually had. Ireland, deprived of their inspirational captain Roy Keane by a pre-tournament row, could also have levelled when Matt Holland drove a first-half shot from outside the penalty area just wide of the post, the ball skidding on the turf soaked by rain. Germany otherwise gave Mick McCarthy's players little change in the first half, although Kahn had to move sharply to gather a nicely weighted cross from Kevin Kilbane. Before his scoring header, Klose was lucky to escape a booking for blatantly diving in a penalty-area challenge from Steve Staunton, who was making his 100th international appearance. The threat from Ballack grew in the second half as the Bayern Munich-bound midfielder caused panic in the Irish area but his finishing let him down. Ian Harte failed to make an impression on the game and Quinn's introduction proved the right decision as he used his height to head into the path of Keane, giving the Irish fans something to cheer.
