Competition details
1st round (league system)
Two groups of five teams each.
2nd round (cup system)
The winner of group 1 and group 2 will compete in a home-and-away play-off.
The winner qualifies to compete in a home-and-away
play-off
against the team coming 5th in the South America preliminary competition.
The winner will qualify for the final competition of the 2002 World Cup Korea/Japan.
