The FIFA Club World Championship is a new competition organised by FIFA and the first tournament kicked off in Brazil on 5 January 2000 and reached its final on 14 January 2000.
The draw for the 2001 tournament took place on 6 March 2001 and it was supposed to take place in Spain starting on 28 July 2001 with the final taking place on 12 August 2001 at the Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid. The tournament was eventually cancelled due to the collapse of FIFA's marketing partner ISMM/ISL.
The tournament was revived in 2005 in Japan with all continental champions taking place in a knock-out style competition and was repeated again in Japan in 2006 and 2007.
